INAUGURAL MALAKOFF INTERSTATE FELLOWSHIP RIDE TO USHER IN NEW YEAR WITH 700 CYCLISTS Penang, Malaysia (November 20, 2009) – Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) aims to integrate recreational sports with community welfare through the inaugural “Malakoff Interstate Fellowship Ride 2009” launched today by YB Puan Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, the Chairman of State Youth and Sports and Women, Family and Community Development Committee. The 220 km bike ride covering the states of Penang, Perak and Kedah is expected to attract over 700 cyclists from around the country. In addition to being a sporting event, the two-day Ride, jointly organised by the State Government of Penang and the Penang State Sports Council with technical expertise from the Knights of the Round Table (KOTRT) and Maju Ke Hadapan Cycling Group (MKH), aims to raise RM 20, 000 from the registration fee to benefit the National Autistic Society of Malaysia. Yusop Rashid, Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications said, “We are thrilled to launch the very first Malakoff Interstate Fellowship Ride 2009. This unique event is a fusion of recreational sports and community welfare as we will be ushering in 2010 with our cyclist friends in a healthy and enthusiastic spirit, and in the process giving a token to support the National Autistic Society of Malaysia.” “We want to start the New Year with a resolution to stay healthy, have fun and contribute meaningfully to those around us. We feel, while it’s important to take care of ourselves and enjoy, we should not forget those around us who need our support,” he added. The first day of the Ride, scheduled to commence on December 31, 2009 will cover 149 kilometres on trunk roads over the three states of Penang, Perak and Kedah. Commencing from Auto-City, Juru, the cyclists will go in one loop through Kulim Industrial City, Selama, Bukit Merah, and end the ride at Auto-City. The second day, which marks the beginning of 2010, will witness cyclists crossing the scenic 13-km Penang Bridge into the Pearl of the Orient. The third lane of the bridge will be cleared for riders to pass through safely with the permission of the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM). The remaining route will cover half of Penang Island, culminating at the Penang Youth Park In order to ensure the safety of the participants, marshals from the police traffic division, KOTRT, MKH and KTM Motonation will be positioned along the entire route of the Ride. Yusop Rashid added, “The key factor that will determine the success of the Malakoff Interstate Fellowship Ride 2009 is the participants’ passion for this recreational sport and the goodwill they have for the less fortunate. Hence, we urge cyclists to unite in this endeavour to make this event a huge success - for it will not just benefit your health, but also that of the special children.” This Ride is part of Malakoff’s flagship CSR platform – the Malakoff Community Partnerships which aims to bring together people of varied background to nurture friendship and contribute meaningfully to the community. “On our part, we will continue to explore and sponsor ingenious sporting events in the near future. Malakoff will remain committed to supporting worthy events that provide exposure to Malaysian sports enthusiasts as well as contribute back to the community in some way,” he concluded. The technical support for the Ride is provided by KOTRT, a non-profit group of aficionado cyclists based in Penang, organising recreational bike rides, purely on a voluntary basis. They lead big group rides, clear new trails and regularly organize expeditions to far flung exotic destinations. They are inspired to cycle long distances to motivate others towards healthy living and greater social interaction. At the launch, KOTRT’s representative, Shamoon Shabudin, elaborated on the organisation’s passion for cycling and how they were very excited about the upcoming maiden Malakoff Interstate Fellowship Ride. A fervent cyclist for the last six years, he said, “We are all so excited about the Malakoff Interstate Fellowship ride. This is such a novel way to welcome the New Year – it’s fun and healthy, and we get to meet old friends and make new ones too! We hope more companies will come forward to support such events that are good for health and unite the people – all in one go.” Those interested can register online via Delta Business Solution Sdn Bhd’s website www.deltaonline.com.my or any of its branches before December 1, 2009.
