PRESS RELEASE MOONLIGHT FESTIVAL CONCERT
Mount Miriam Hospital, a 40 bedded not-for-profit hospital was founded by the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood in 1976, is dedicated to the continuing care of cancer patients regardless of age, race and religion and also to provide compassionate and holistic care with a comprehensive service. The hospital has grown from a nursing home for terminally ill patients in the beginning to become a well-equipped cancer treatment hospital catering not only to the patients from the northern region of Malaysia but to patients throughout the country and as well as neighbouring countries. By the end of this year, 2008, Mount Miriam hospital will be replacing it’s sixteen-year old Linear Accelerator with a most up-to-date and advanced technology in Radiation Oncology – the Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT). This new IGRT machine shall further enhance our cancer treatment technique by enabling to increase dosage delivery accurately to the cancer target and to minimize corresponding dosage to critical organs and normal tissues. The estimated cost of this new IGRT machine is RM8 million. The installation of the new machine in our hospital will certainly improve our treatment facilities and meet the increasing demand for higher quality radiotherapy treatment. Yearly, fundraising and charity events are organized to finance the various mission work carried out by the hospital. This year, we are privileged to have many talented groups of singers, dancers, actors and other performers collaborating to organize a spectacular concert to raise funds for the purchase of the new IGRT machine for our Hospital. The overall concept for this production was created by Cheng Hin who has spent many years to promoting and organizing musical activities in Penang. This joint presentation by Fingerprints, Georgetown Singers, Mayson Music Station, Hui Yin Seah Chinese Orchestra, PESSBAND, Green Apple Ballet Academy, Wildcats Dancers, and Penang Players entitled “Moonlight Festival” will be held in the auditorium of Dewan Sri Pinang on the evening of Thursday, 11th September 2008. The concert will begin with wonderful music, followed by excerpts from William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, through which there will be woven appropriate music, performed by many of the aforementioned groups. The concert is produced by Marlene Fox who has helped to organize and perform in many charity musical shows. George Swalwell is the overall Musical Director and conductor of the Georgetown Singers. The play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is directed by Ian Kerr, the recently retired Headmaster of Uplands School ~ so it is no surprise that several teachers with great acting experience are also participating in the production. Sunway University College is one on the main sponsors for this concert.
